All you needle to know about microneedling

Who invented it?

Like many natural beauty treatments, microneedling’s been around for years. In 1905 a German dermatologist found that it reduced scars, birthmarks and hyperpigmentation. In the 1990s, South African cosmetic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes (who also created Environ skincare) introduced his first microneedling roller and it started to take off.

How does it work?

The tiny needles create dozens of miniscule punctures in your skin, which switches it into healing mode. This encourages the creation of new skin cells and the production of collagen and elastin (the fibres that keep skin plump and firm and youthful – we love them!)

What are the benefits?

Microneedling is clinically proven to enhance the look of your skin (and I can vouch for that). It’s excellent for overall skin rejuvenation – reducing fine lines, increasing firmness and improving texture – as well as enlarged pores, pigmentation and scars. It also enhances the effectiveness of your skincare products because it helps them penetrate more deeply. So you get your lovely age-defying ingredients right where you want them. Roll regularly and you should see a difference in a few weeks.

How do you do it?

  • Use your roller two or three times a week. Best at night before bed.
  • Make sure your skin’s squeaky clean.
  • Apply your favourite serum packed with age-defying ingredients, such as botanical extracts, essential oils, vitamins or hyaluronic acid.
  • Roll lightly over your face, neck and decolletage for 1-2 minutes. I start on the forehead and work down.
  • Afterwards, you can apply another layer of serum. I usually apply a few drops of oil too.
  • If you have time, it’s great to finish off with a jade roller. It’s soothes and cools your skin, and helps the last of your serum to sink right in.

Cut to the chase – does it hurt?

It shouldn’t – if it does, you may be rolling too hard. It should feel like a slight tingling or prickling sensation. I actually like it, because it’s like a physical reminder of all the benefits my skin’s enjoying. Lovely!

A few do’s and don’t’s

  • Remember, you are making tiny wounds in your skin, so easy does it!
  • Never roll over your eyelids or lips (although it’s great for lines around the lips).
  • Good hygiene is vital. Clean your roller every time you’ve used it, with an antiseptic or alcohol cleaner. And never let anyone else use it.
  • Replace rollers about every three months, as the needles wear out.

Who’s OliviereWilson?

This new – and super stylish – kid on the microneedling block was founded by the lovely Catherine Wilson (apparently the Oliviere part is named after her sis!)

They currently offer three roller sizes: 0.3mm (the one I was given); 0.5mm (best for skin already used to microneedling) and 0.75mm for the body (same principle as the face, but it must take a whole lot longer!) Catherine tells me they’re bringing out a handy antiseptic cleaning spray, as well as a serum with hyaluronic acid. Sounds perfect.

I love this roller and would buy it. It’s well made and sturdy. The roller and case are plastic (both recyclable) and the needles are sterilised medical grade titanium (always steer clear of cheap rollers as they could damage your precious skin). It’s also beautifully designed, in pretty lilac-grey, with a sculptural shape and classy black and white box. Who doesn’t like beauty products that make your bathroom look great as well as your skin?
